Picture this: You walk into a bar and see nothing but large, grotesque pigs that are all trying to win a date and maybe more with you. At the end of the night, one of the pigs goes into the washroom to obtain a common contraceptive, and almost simultaneously morphs into a man. This condom ad commercial was banned by the CBS and FOX networks.
While endless numbers of people around the world felt the intended humor and many messages of the condom ad, CBS made a statement calling the 30 second segment inappropriate for its network even with late night restrictions. Although the commercial didn't appear as unsuitable as CBS would have you think, its explanation for yanking it off the airwaves is somewhat respectable.
The FOX network on the other hand - which has brought us "tremendous" and "respectable" shows like "Cops", "America's Most Wanted", and so many other shows featuring promiscuous teenagers demonstrating condom use not just for health reasons - went a much different route with explaining its decision to pull this condom ad. According to FOX, contraceptive advertising must stress health related uses rather than prevention of pregnancy.
So apparently it is now wrong to promote condoms as a way to limit unwanted pregnancies (which the world definitely does not need), but also to advertise them in a non-realistic way that does not cut it when it comes to getting a serious, clear cut message across.
Why not promote both reasons: to prevent pregnancy and to prevent disease?
Since when is a condom only used to rid you of STD's and other serious viruses, which can be a lifelong problem depending on the type? Bringing a life into this world requires equal attention and struggle.
It seems FOX would have been much better off giving a more believable explanation for why they of all network - which may be considered one of the least respected due to the kind of programs it airs - chose to follow along in CBS's footsteps. It would have been slightly more reasonable if they said they chose not to show the ad because it was demeaning to men because they were presented as pigs, but just as pigs don't fly, neither would any explanation that FOX could have concocted.
Point blank, the commercial promoted a healthy view of sex and condom usage, because even though men were presented as pigs, at the end of the night, they were responsible, and chose to get a condom to prevent pregnancy, and to be healthy, as FOX puts it.
