Masturbation, by definition, is the stimulation of one's own genitals resulting in an orgasm.  Recent studies have shown that masturbation has its potential health benefits.

The definition of masturbation is the “erotic stimulation especially of one's own genital organs commonly resulting in orgasm and achieved by manual or other bodily contact exclusive of sexual intercourse, by instrumental manipulation, occasionally by sexual fantasies, or by various combinations of these agencies. “   Many people are ashamed of discussing masturbation, or even deny that he or she has ever tried it.  Certain religions and cultures, which view masturbation as sinful behavior, also believe that masturbation quickly leads to other activities including viewing pornography and engaging in homosexual activity.  Some individuals believe that masturbation is considered a selfish act since you are pleasuring yourself, which may lead to not having the need to pleasure your significant other.  While each individual, religious group, or culture are entitled to their beliefs, here are some reasons why you shouldn’t feel ashamed, and may even benefit from masturbation.

Am I in a minority of people who masturbate?

Absolutely not.  Studies show that 95% of males and 89% of females reported that they masturbate.  Although it may not be a topic that is opening discussed amongst friends, there are people of all backgrounds, professions, and ages that engage in masturbation.

Is Masturbation Harmful?

Masturbation is regarded as a natural behavior in both men and women by the medical industry.   It does not cause any harm to an individual physically or mentally if done in moderation throughout a person’s life.   If an individual excessively masturbates to the point of interfering with his or her daily life, then that is where it can have a negatively affect.  For example, if you are masturbating to the point of ignoring your housework, homework, etc, then that could pose as a problem.

Benefits of Masturbation:

Believe it or not, research does show that masturbation does have its potential health benefits in men and women.  Here are a few potential benefits of masturbation:

  • Masturbation helps to you relax and fall asleep easier
  • Relieves stress
  • Boosts your immune system
  • May offer protection against prostrate cancer.  A recent study has shown that a percentage of people that masturbated regularly to replace normal sexual intercourse has a lower incidence of prostate cancer.
  • Masturbation in essence is safe sex without the worry of pregnancy and STD’s

In summation, masturbation may potentially improve your health, and is not harmful to you, mentally or physically.  Whether you prefer to utilize your own fingertips, vibrator, or other types of sex toys, you may be improving your health and well being by masturbating.
